Methods and precautions for replacing refrigeration compressors

Oct. 18, 2024

Replacing an air conditioning refrigeration compressor is a complex and highly technical repair job that requires following certain operating methods and precautions. The following are the detailed steps and matters needing attention:

Operation method

1, cut off the power supply:

Before replacing the compressor, the power supply of the air conditioner must be disconnected.

Air conditioners powered by power plugs should be unplugged, and air conditioners powered by circuit breakers should be disconnected by pulling down on the push button.

2. Empty the refrigerant:

Use a live spanner to loosen the outdoor unit thin tube nut and allow the refrigerant in the system to bubble outward from the nut.

When the gas becomes weak, remove the nut of the thin tube, so that the outdoor unit 2-way valve and connecting piping are connected to the atmosphere, so that the refrigerant can be completely emptied.

3, disassemble the shell and compressor lead:

Remove the top top cover, front side cover and rear side cover of the outdoor unit in turn.

Remove the insulation cotton on the outside of the compressor.

Loosen the fixing nut of the compressor terminal cover and remove the nut and the terminal cover.

Record the role of the terminal leads and remove the 3 leads.

4.Disassemble the compressor:

Using a torch, heat the compressor discharge and suction ports and pull out the connecting pipework.

Loosen the compressor foot nut and remove the compressor.

5Install the new compressor:

Install the rubber gasket on the new compressor feet and install the 3 feet of the compressor correspondingly into the fixing bar of the outdoor unit base.

Organise the connecting pipes, insert the thick pipe into the compressor suction pipe port and the thin pipe into the discharge pipe port.

Use a torch to weld the connecting pipes of the compressor exhaust pipe and suction pipe.

6.Install the connecting wires and housing:

Install the 3 leads on the terminal block.

Install the wiring cover and top fixing nut.

Install insulation foam, rear side cover, front side cover and top top cover.

7.Leak check and refrigerant charging:

Use detergent to check for bubbling at soldered areas to determine if leaks exist at solder joints.

If there are no leaks, install the outdoor unit thin tube nuts and tighten.

Charge the system with the proper amount of refrigerant.

8, testing and commissioning:

Start the air conditioner and check whether the cooling effect, operating noise and temperature control are normal.

Precautions

1, choose the right compressor:

Ensure that the new compressor matches the model and specifications of the original compressor, otherwise compatibility problems and unstable performance may result.

2, Power off and safety measures:

Always disconnect the air conditioner from the power supply before performing any maintenance operations to avoid the risk of electric shock.

3.Refrigerant Handling:

Follow relevant safety regulations to avoid refrigerant leakage and environmental pollution.

If possible, refrigerant should be recovered instead of being discharged directly.

4Professional skills and tools:

Replacing the compressor requires certain professional knowledge and skills, and it is better for those who do not have relevant experience to be operated by professional air conditioning technicians.

5, system cleaning and leak detection:

Before replacing the compressor, the air conditioning system should be thoroughly cleaned to remove dirt and impurities.

After replacement, perform a system leak check to ensure there is no refrigerant leakage.

6, Installation and connection:

Install the new compressor correctly and make sure that all connecting pipes and wires are firmly connected.

Pay attention to sealing and leakage prevention measures.

7Vacuum pumping and refrigerant charging:

After replacing the compressor, it is necessary to carry out a vacuum pumping operation to remove air and moisture from the system.

Then charge the appropriate amount of refrigerant according to the specified amount.

8, to prevent system contamination:

During the replacement process, the filter drier must be replaced in time to prevent the moisture and impurities in the system from damaging the compressor.

9, Precautions when charging refrigerant:

Don't be too fast when charging refrigerant to prevent liquid shock, which may cause the valve plate to break.

10, check the system parameters:

After installation, check the operating parameters of the compressor, such as suction pressure/temperature, discharge pressure/temperature, differential oil pressure, etc., to ensure normal operation of the system.

By following the above practices and precautions, you can ensure that the process of replacing the refrigeration compressor in your air conditioner goes smoothly and that it operates and performs properly. Meanwhile, regular maintenance and servicing of the air conditioning system is recommended to prolong the service life of the compressor.
